A Storied History of Success
The story and evolution of my legal practice, The Law Offices of Stephen Gorey, started in 1975.
After graduating from law school, I immediately went to work with my father, who had a large workers' compensation practice in Arizona. My father was disabled with Parkinson's disease, so I was tasked with handling cases from day one. The firm was named Gorey and Gorey.
In addition to handling workers' compensation cases, I also took personal injury cases that came to the firm. I had success right from the start. In my first seven years of practice, I only lost one personal injury case.
Early Success in Arizona Led to a Vibrant California Practice
Within my first three years at Gorey and Gorey, I won a significant jury award for a client in a case against McDonalds. The jury award was a record at the time for a herniated disc injury and it was publicized in the local news. About a year later, a Phoenix jury awarded another record verdict to one of my clients, which was also in the local news.
My law firm grew to six attorneys. We were very busy and I started handling a lot of pro bono work in Supplemental Security Income (SSI) cases. This led to a vibrant Social Security Disability practice. In one such case in Yuma, Arizona, a judge suggested that we start a personal injury practice in San Diego, because "No one is preparing cases as well as you are."
Success in California
In 1981, I opened an office in San Diego. In 1982, I moved to San Diego and within two years I had the largest Social Security practice west of Cleveland, Ohio. I was handling upwards of 50 hearings a month and eventually I handled over 1,500 such claims, winning almost all at hearing and practically all of the others on appeal or with a new application.
In addition to handling Social Security Disability cases before administrative judges, I handled approximately 60 appeals. I was so successful that the Assistant U.S. Attorneys began stipulating to remand any appeal which I filed.
In 1995, I was visited by a group of Laotian immigrants from the Hmong community in Fresno, California. They had heard that there was a lawyer in San Diego "who never lost cases" and they asked me if I would provide legal assistance in the Central Valley. Not long after that, I moved to Fresno and set up a new office.
Now Representing Clients Throughout California and Arizona
Today, my law firm has offices in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sausalito (serving the San Francisco Bay Area) and Tucson. I represent clients throughout California and Arizona with a focus on the representation of clients that have suffered serious injuries. I also represent family members in wrongful death claims.
